Mike in the Skimmer. These plywood skiffs were built in Houghs Neck and were ideal for the island. The flat bottom curved up at the bow and made beaching the boats easy. You could run full-throttle at the beach, pull the outboard at the last second and slide three boat lengths up the beach, which was nice if the tide was out and you weren't going anywhere for a while. They were just light enough to be able to spin around and push back in the water by yourself. The 35 hp Evinrude moved them right along! |

Looking at Fort Andrews from the pier after a nor'easter. The enlisted men's barracks are dead ahead and the guardhouse is to the right. |

Looking across Hull Gut at Peddocks. The tide rips through the Gut and an opposing wind will kick up a good sea. |

Mary Perry and Ed McDevitt |

Ed and Leslie on Mike's porch. Ed is Mike's brother and has owned various tugs in Boston since the mid-eighties. Leslie grew up on Peddocks on the east head. Her mother, Tilly, had grown up on the island and went to school in Boston each day by boat. Tilly's father was the fort's tailor. |
